In this 4-part webinar-style video series, I've included all of the information I've gathered on school and community garden spaces and programming. While in my previous role (and as a Certified School Garden Educator), I was routinely asked the same types of questions as I supported various sites with their programming goals.
"How can we convince our school or district to support a garden space?"
"Where is the best location for our garden?"
"What types of materials do we need to build a garden?"
"How does irrigation work?"
"What can we grow in the desert?"
Each site I worked with had high hopes of building a flourishing garden (or rehabilitating a dormant garden space). And, while all of these are necessary questions to be asking, they should always be asked in conjunction with:
"How can we make our garden sustainable?"
This series is broken down into garden benefits, garden preparation and planning, growing zones and seasons, and planting best practices (with a focus on Arizona, and growing in the Phoenix valley and its immediate surroundings). All four parts can be watched in just over an hour, and the series as a whole provides a decent foundation for beginning garden advocates. It can also act as a refresh for those folks who may have suspended garden programming during COVID years. Every part of the series was designed with garden space and garden programming sustainability in mind.
Plus, this is the perfect time to dig into all of these discussions for the 2023-2024 school year!
